PROJECT: Open Space

The Open Space Toolkit community workshop series was a catalyst for generating practical solutions to local land use and conservation issues. Rural resident, landowner, land manager or developer - or a citizen interested in sustaining important community values related to the natural landscape found this workshop of interest.

Through facilitated dialogue and collaborative learning activities, began building a shared understanding of the factors influencing growth and community change in the Fernie area; identify important assets and benefits related to natural landscape; and determine the most appropriate tools and processes to ensure those assets are protected and maintained for the future.

Hosted by the Elk Valley Stewardship Centre, the workshop was designed and delivered by the Chinook Institute for Community Stewardship

This was the pilot test of the southeastern BC version of the Open Space Toolkit program. Based on a similar Alberta workshop series called the Open Space Toolkit for Alberta, initially delivered in 2005, the southeast BC version contains resource materials and workshop content specific to this region and the overall BC context.
