PROJECT: Wetland Education Program

We Connect assisted the BC Wildlife Federation in building the Wetland Education Program into a robust well respected province wide program.

Mission: Foster wetland conservation through education and stewardship. The program includes Wetlandkeepers, Wetlands Institute and Puddle Project.

Wetlandkeepers is a program for individuals and community groups interested in stewarding a wetland. Its primary purpose is to give stewards the skills to monitor their community wetlands. Today many private citizens play a key role in conservation initiatives as volunteers.

The Wetlands Institute is an intensive seven-day course offered since 1998. Participants learn about the importance and diversity of wetlands, practice current field techniques to inventory wetlands, water quality, soils, birds, amphibians, and fish, and discuss ways to raise public awareness and influence conservation policies.

Puddle Project includes training in the use of GPS (global positioning system) technology to map wetlands less than one hectare in size. Guest speakers from local, regional and provincial land-use planning processes speak on planning processes and mapping tools within their organizations to conserve small wetlands.
