The program resulted in 8 hectares at 35 different invasive plant sites being hand-pulled by 680 Weed Warrior volunteers. Through their hand-pulling efforts we were able to address weed infestations close to water that have historically gone untreated.
The EKIPP is in year 3 of a 3 year pilot to prevent, contain and reduce invasive plants in the East Kootenay. Weed Warriors is one component of the Pilot. Through Weed Warriors our objective is to promote public awareness of invasive species identification, prevention and management. Noxious weeds within 10 meters of water cannot be treated with chemicals because they are within a pesticide free zone. Therefore other methods of control, such as hand-pulling, need to be implemented. Without the assistance of our amazing Weed Warriors it would be too costly to pay for hand-pulling crews to address these problem invasive plant sites. Over 680 volunteers from kids, moms and grandpas, to Girl Guides, church groups, and environmental clubs were involved, learning about invasive plants in our region and putting knowledge to action.
The support of community minded businesses including Shaw Cable, Koocanusa Publications, Interior Reforestation, Top Crop, Home Hardware, Save-on-Foods, Kootenay Livestock Association, Windermere Farmers Institute, and the Waldo Stockbreeders Association was exceptional. Weed Warrior program supplies totalling $8,500 was donated! Without the support of these businesses, the huge success of Weed Warriors would not be possible. Join an event hosted by one of the community minded organization and have some fun with your community!
